Close to 1,000 farmers, mainly irrigators’ association members, and local officials participated in the first-ever Municipal Organic Agriculture Congress that was held in the region of Cotabato in the centre of the main island Mindanao.
The Department of Agriculture’s regional executive director, Amalia Jayag-Datukan, who was the guest of honor and speaker, said the congress was aimed at ensuring the full implementation and success of the Food Staples Self-Sufficiency Program of the agency by promoting organic farming practices not only in the region but throughout the country.
“Organic farming practices have contributed greatly to the health of Filipinos as well as to the preservation of the environment,” Datukan told the participants. She also informed the farmers that the agricultural department is set to receive some P 21.7m (€405,000) for organic farming projects.
