Increased global organic winegrowing area

The area used for growing organic wine and table grapes increased from 190,000 to at least 220,000 ha in 2010 (provisional figures), according to information from Helga Willer of the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture in Switzerland.

The three largest growing countries are Spain with 57,000 ha, Italy with 52,000 ha and France with 50,000 ha. The share of the total winegrowing area in each country is 5% in Spain and 6% in Italy and France. The rise in the past year was over 3,000ha in Spain alone, as much as 8,600 ha in Italy, and 11,000ha in France.

Other countries in which organic winegrowing has reached appreciable dimensions are the USA with 11,000 ha, Turkey with almost 8,000 ha and Germany and Greece with about 5,000 ha each.
