German Organic Wine Harvest 2011 – Happy Wine Producers

Despite the difficult weather conditions in 2011, the Ecovin wine producers were satisfied with their wine grape harvest. The vines budded early due to summer-like conditions in spring. May started with temperatures under the freezing point which froze many young shoots at various sites.

Areas that were affected included Württemberg, Franken and a few flatter vineyards in the Pfalz and Rheinhessen had serious frost damages. The irregular summer months filled with lots of rain kept the organic wine producers on their toes working on plant protection especially fighting fungal infections. However, just in time for the main harvest, the weather conditions improved allowing for a good fruit. “The warm, high pressure weather at the end of August and lasting into October, was perfect for the quality of grape”, summed up Mr. Paulin Köpfer, President of Ecovin-Baden.

The harvest quantity was clearly greater than last year and just slightly above the average. A particular characteristic of the 2011 is the moderate acidity, that distinguishes it from the previous vintage.
