News of Organic Industry
Consumers in the United Arab Emirates are buying more organically grown food, according to a report in The National, the Abu Dhabi daily newspaper. The Ministry of Environment and Water has announced that more than 5,000 t of organic products were harvested last year.
This corresponds to 15 % growth over 2009. As the demand for regional products is rising, glasshouse production is also increasing. The number of farmers markets in the Emirates has also grown in the past years, and local farmers sell vegetables, herbs and dairy products in Dubai’s urban development areas every Friday. The range of fresh products attracts great interest among the consumers. Similar markets have now been set up in the other Emirates too.
