Germany: Federal Council supports GMO-free seeds

“The protests by farmers and citizens have had an effect,” says Felix Prinz zu Löwenstein, President of BÖLW, welcoming the recent decision by the German Federal Council. A proposal to water down the zero tolerance ruling failed. There were protests in many of the German states after the now rejected proposal had become public at the beginning of March.
Löwenstein called on the German government to support the continuation of zero tolerance for seeds in Brussels too. It must also be ensured that the person responsible for unwanted contamination can be held liable. In case of doubt, the owner of the modified genetic sequence should be regarded as the person responsible. The industry has, however, applied to Brussels for licences to grow another 28 genetically modified plants. Licences are about to be granted for three plants. BÖLW has therefore drawn up a petition for the German parliament.
