Program for organic farming in India


The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has underscored the need to revive organic farming in the entire North East region of India. 20 scientists of ICAR Complex and the Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI) attended a week-long training programme on 'Organic Farming for Sustainable Hill Agriculture' at the ICAR complex last week. The program which started from September 17 and concluded on the 23rd, imparted hands-on experience in organic farming with the emphasis on its implications in farming practice. Another 30 participants from the Krishi Vikas Kendras, and other Institutes in the region also attended. ATARI Director, Dr A K Tripathi laid emphasis on strengthening collaboration among institutes to mobilise resources to spread organic farming technologies for the ultimate benefit of the farmers in the region. ICAR Director, S V Ngachan was speaking at the closing.


The major topics dealt during sessions included soil management, crop nutrition, manure management, crop rotation, recycling of nutrient and energy through integrated farming system, weed management and pest and disease management, according to the statement released by the institute.
