Danish organic exports still booming

Danish companies exported organic food worth DKK 1.533m (about €206m) in 2013, an increase of 31% on 2012, data from Statistik Denmark has revealed. This is the country's eighth consecutive year of increasing organic exports and the largest growth ever. (Picture: Ørbæk Bryggeri at BioFach 2014)

"Denmark is well-known for being the world’s leading organic nation, and we are the home of some of the world’s largest companies – for example in the organic meat and dairy sector. Moreover, we have one of the world’s most innovative and fastest growing industries with about 150 exporting organic companies. Danish organic products reach countries as far as China, Korea and the USA", Helen Birk, export manager of Organic Denmark explains.

Germany and Sweden remain the largest export markets for Danish organic companies and account for 66% of exports. One of the Danish organic companies that have been increasing these markets is Ørbæk Bryggeri. Both 2013 and 2014 have been really successful, and export turnover has grown by 20 - 30% both years. Demand from Sweden has grown significantly, and the company has doubled exports to the Swedish market in 2014, Niels Romer, director and owner of Ørbæk Bryggeri states.

Many organic companies are uniting to reach more export markets – for example at trade fairs and meetings. The next big joint export promotion takes place in February at BioFach. Organic Denmark will host the joint stand for 19 Danish companies.
